Great places to visit on the Riviera Line
Known as the ‘Riviera Line’, the train line between Torbay and Exeter follows the coast and the river Exe, making it one of the UK’s most scenic train journeys. Now that summer is here and the sun is shining, there are lots of great day trip opportunities using the Riviera Line. Here are some ideas:
Top tip! If three or more people are travelling by train, asking for a group saver ticket and save 1/3 on the ticket price.
Teignmouth is a great seaside town with sandy beaches, friendly beachside cafes/bars and a pier. ‘Back Beach’ is also a great place to sit and watch the sunset over the river Teign.
Similar to Teignmouth, Dawlish is another small and friendly seaside town with lots beach, gift shops and cafes. For anyone with a sweet tooth, local family run business Gays Creamery is famous for its ice cream with Devon clotted cream!
Dawlish Warren is home to one of the best and busiest beaches in Devon and is very popular with holidaymakers in the summer. There is also a small amusement park close to the beach with go karts, crazy golf and arcades.
There isn’t much to see in Starcross itself, but it is close to the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle, which is a popular tourist attraction (around a 30 min walk from the station). Ferries also run across the river to Exmouth which offer beautiful views of the river and dolphins are often spotted during the crossing. Exmouth has a great beach and is also a great place to spend some time.

Exeter St Thomas
Exeter is famous for its cathedral, great shopping and restaurants. However, Exeter Quay is also a great place (a short walk from Exeter St Thomas) to visit and a great starting point to explore the Exe Estuary Trail. Bikes can be rented from the Quay and miles of car-free cycle paths along the river are there to explore. Kayaking and paddle boarding are also activities.
