A first week in the UK
Arriving in a new country, living with a new host family and starting a new job all in a second language can be daunting for even the most confident individual. That’s why we do everything possible to make every participant’s introduction to the UK as smooth, structured and supported as possible. Here's a sample guide to a first week in the UK with TTPL:
Saturday – Arrive and meet your host family
Sunday – Explore the area and prepare for the week ahead
Monday – Welcome Meeting
Tuesday – Introduction to work and evening social meeting
Wednesday – Full day at work
Thursday – Weekly Student Meeting
Friday – Last day at work for the week
Saturday – meet with friends and enjoy the weekend!
We recommend arriving on either Saturday/Sunday. This gives a great chance to meet the host family and time to get settled before the week ahead. Transfers can be arranged by TTPL, picking-up from the airport and dropping at the host family. If travel arrangements are organised privately, the host family will be available to pick-up participants from the nearest bus/train station. A TTPL welcome pack will be waiting for all new arrivals, including all need-to-know information for the week ahead.
After the weekend arrival, all participants will attend a welcome meeting at TTPL (usually held on a Monday afternoon). This is a chance to find out more about the area, living in the UK, details about starting work and information on our social activities.
All participants are collected from the host family by a member of the TTPL team and taken to work. We will then introduce the employer and participant before starting the day’s work.
Every week, we organise meetings at a bar or café on a Tuesday evening in Torbay and Exeter (occasional meetings in Plymouth as & when we have participants located there). These meetings are held so participants can practice English in a relaxed setting, meet new friends and also a chance to catch-up with TTPL and ask any questions surrounding the programme.
Every Thursday, we hold a cultural activity open to all participants. Activities vary from week to week, but the aim is always to experience something new in the area and enjoy everything South Devon has to offer. This year we've been to the beach on a vintage bus tour, enjoyed a Devon Cream Tea, visited a waterpark, zoo, Kents Cavern caves and been seal/dolphin spotting on a private boat trip, just to name a few activities!
Enjoy the weekend
The weekend is a good chance to meet with new found friends and explore the local area! We also occasionally run day trips (e.g. Bath, Bristol, London, Eden Project) - additional cost. We're also always happy to give tips and ideas on great trips and activities in the area.
