5 fun things to do this August Bank Holiday

There’s always something great to do during the summer in Devon. Traditionally, the August Bank Holiday is the area’s busiest weekend, with regattas, concerts and exhibitions taking place across the county. If you haven't made plans, here are five ideas that are all accessible with public transport:

Torbay Royal Regatta

When? 25th-29th August

Where? Torquay Seafront

The Torbay Royal Regatta is one of Europe’s longest running sailing events, taking place for over 200 years! There’s a variety of championship races taking place over three days and fireworks on Monday 27th August

Exeter Street Art Festival

When? 25th August

Where? Exeter City Centre

A one day event, showcasing the talents of south west street performers and artists, with a range of free performances taking place throughout the city.

Shaldon Regatta

When? 19th -27th August

Where? Shaldon (best way to get there is Stagecoach 22 bus)

Shaldon is a beautifully located seaside village and the regatta is a great excuse to visit with a variety of events taking place on the beach and in the water. There are also some of the area’s best live bands performing across the weekend at the Ferry Boat Inn (right next to the beach!)

Visit Dartmoor

When? 25th August

Where? A ‘hop-on/hop-off’ circular bus route starts and finishes from Newton Abbot train station (only runs Saturdays).

A great option if you’re looking to explore Dartmoor but lacking transport. Dartmoor National Park is the largest area of open countryside in the South of England and home to beautiful scenery, stunning landscapes, a variety of wildlife and picturesque villages.

Cider and Sausage Festival

When? 25th August

Where? Double Locks, Exeter (a pleasant 30 minute walk down the River Exe from Exeter Quay. Bicycles can also be rented from Saddles & Paddles on Exeter Quay which makes for a fun option and also a great opportunity to explore the Exe Estuary Trail.)

The Double Locks is a lovely pub in a great location and on Saturday 25th, there will be over 50 different ciders and a selection of different sausages to try as part of the annual Cider and Sausage Festival.
